Program Description

The Toledo Hospital Vascular Surgery Residency Program at Jobst Vascular Center (JVC) is a 24-month program designed to meet the three primary objectives needed to achieve sub-specialty certification in general vascular surgery:

  • Perform a broad range of conventional open vascular surgical procedures
  • Acquire endovascular skills and perform catheter-based diagnostic and therapeutic interventions to master this expanding area of vascular therapeutics and qualify for credentialing in the full scope of endovascular procedures
  • Gain in-depth experience in all aspects of the noninvasive vascular diagnostic laboratory
Four generations of JVC vascular surgery residents with Dr. Comerota. (L to R) Jorge Martinez, MD, 2006-8 resident, Anthony Comerota, MD, JVC Director, Todd Miller, MD, 2004-6 resident, Mark Robbins, MD, 2003-5 resident, Santiago Chahwan, MD, 2005-7 resident.

The entire 24-month period is spent in clinical experience. The Toledo Hospital is a tertiary care hospital and referral center for a 21-county area in northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan. JVC is prepared to evaluate and treat all vascular conditions. The vascular surgery service performs over 2000 cases annually with sufficient variety to meet the needs of a resident in training. No general surgery residents rotate to the vascular surgery service.

Clinical research is actively incorporated into the vascular surgery residency. Rotations are two months in duration, allowing the resident to provide continuity of patient care management from preoperative visits through surgery and including the postoperative period. In addition, residents spend a two-month rotation in the ICAVL-accredited Jobst Vascular Laboratory, which performs over 18,000 diagnostic evaluations each year.

Education conferences are held weekly and include clinical, morbidity/mortality, interesting cases and endovascular conferences. The Journal Club meets six times per year. Basic Science lectures are jointly presented with the University of Michigan. Topics include anatomy, embryology, vascular biology, microbiology, physiology and pathology. Classical and current literature are integrated throughout the curriculum. Vascular surgery residents are responsible for organizing the weekly clinical conference. Vascular surgery residents are encouraged to submit research projects to national and international vascular societies for presentation, and to peer-reviewed journals for publication.

The Toledo Hospital Vascular Surgery Residency Program at JVC is approved by the RRC of the ACGME.

The Toledo Hospital (Jobst Vascular Center) Vascular Surgery Residency program will use the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). Visit the American Association of Medical Schools www.aamc.org to connect to the ERAS program. Jobst will also use the Nation Resident Match Program www.NRMP.org/fellow for the matching process.

The residency year begins on July 1 of each year. For more information on the application process, please contact the office of Dr. Anthony J. Comerota, Program Director, at 1-800-39-JOBST or peggy.mauer@promedica.org .
